Any organisation or individual carrying out a regulated activity in England must register with the Care Quality Commission before they start. Regulated activities include treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic and screening procedures, and transport, triage and medical advice provided remotely. The CQC covers England only: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulators.
Usually, if clinicians assess, advise or treat patients in England, for example through remote consultations or online prescribing. Supplying software on its own is not normally a regulated activity, though it may be regulated as a medical device instead.
